CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The caravan park was one of three perched on the cliff edge between the Beeston Bump and West Runton. Their destination was the smallest and lay between the two larger, more established, holiday encampments. The Norfolk Coast Path wound its way past them, a route for hikers and tourists to take in the sea views, beaches and mixed Norfolk landscape. The county was well known for being flat but there were also hills, which many people appeared not to realise. The famous Beeston Bump, formed by glacial movements thousands of years previously, used to have a twin which had long since been reclaimed by the sea, much as this area of the coast would in due course.

Eric slowed the car at the entrance, looking for signs to direct them to the correct caravan. Unlike most sites, this one was very small and apparently less well organised. Cassie was also looking but the sun had set and there was scant illumination to guide them beyond irregularly spaced lamps at the side of the roads.

“We’re not going to have to knock on every caravan, are we?” Cassie asked.

“Might come to that,” Eric said, looking around. Most of the caravans were not lit and therefore unlikely to be occupied. There were a few with lights on, the sunshine having brought people to their coastal retreat for the weekend.

Someone knocked on the driver’s window, startling both of them.

“Sheesh,” Cassie said. “Scared the daylights out of me.”

Eric wound the window down and a rugged face leaned in, glancing between the two occupants.

“Can I help you?” he asked.

“Yes, thank you,” Eric said. “We’re here to see a friend of ours… William Slegg. We’re not sure which caravan is his.”

“Billy, huh?”

Eric nodded. “Yes, Billy.”

The man focussed on Eric, chewing something absently on one side of his mouth.

“You don’t look like Billy’s usual sort.”

Cassie leaned forward to see past Eric and smiled. “And what sort of people usually visit Billy?”

The man shrugged noncommittally. “I don’t know… weird sort, I guess. You ain’t weird, are you?”

Cassie glanced at Eric and back to the man. “Well, I’m not, but my friend here would fit in perfectly.”

Eric rolled his eyes and the man grinned, showing cigarette stained and blackened teeth. He coughed, a grating, hacking sound, covering his mouth with the back of his hand.

Cassie raised her voice. “Have you seen Billy have any visitors today… or have anyone staying with him do you know?”

“Nope, can’t say as I know. I’m the caretaker of this site…” He looked around, off into the darkness of the caravans, “and not much happens here without me seeing it.”

“Right,” Cassie said. “So, you live here, on the site I mean?”

“Nope. I live down the way in Sheringham. Keeps himself to himself does Billy. Haven’t seen his mother around anytime recently either come to think of it.”

“Does she come often?” Eric asked.

“Nope, can’t say she does.”

Cassie looked at Eric, almost imperceptibly passing judgement on the usefulness of this exchange with a shake of the head.
